After the success of Chandrayaan - totally indegeneous moon lander, Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) is looking forward for manned space missions. If this comes true, then India will be the fourth nation to launch its own manned spacecraft with its own launcher. (USSR, USA & China are the first three)The Indian space agency announced it will work with Russia to help redesign the Soyuz for future Indian space missionsThe Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) will work alongside the Russian Space Agency to share technology and hardware for a new Indian space mission. Specifically, India plans to redesign the Russian Soyuz space capsule for its own manned mission launches in the future.
Designed in 1967, the Soyuz has been used to ferry astronauts from the International Space Station (ISS) back to Earth, and will be responsible for ferrying U.S. astronauts into space once the current generation of space shuttles (Atlantis, Discovary and Endeavour) is retired on 2010.Two shuttles (Challenger & Columbia) are destroyed in accident, one was retired (Enterprise) from the service. NASA is working on ORION program to replace space shuttles with Crew Exploration Vehicle, with the name Project Constellation, planned
in 2014.
Buran was the only other space shuttle vehicle available other than US shuttles, Designed by USSR, Buran completed its only unmanned flight to space (1988) before cancellation of the Soviet shuttle program in 1993. The Buran was subsequently destroyed by a hangar collapse in 2002.
